a fool, idiot, silly person. A word which has been recorded in Australia and the USA since at least the early 1950s, and in Britain since the mid-1970s when it was popular among schoolchildren. The word may be a shortening of 'dill pickle' (gher-kins may also be the source of wally, used to describe a fool), or of 'dilly'.
